The Venosta countryside is rich in culture. King Ortler, the gentle giant, watches over the region’s scenic and cultural treasures. These include Glorenza, the smallest town in the Tyrol and in Italy, an architectural jewel, that is adored by everyone who discovers it. The fully preserved town wall with its three massive towers and its series of smaller look-out towers, surrounds a network of picturesque alleys and corners, burger houses dating back to the 16th century and leafy arbours with their individual charm. The imaginative restoration work carried out has breathed new life into this town while retaining all its original features. More Information

Sluderno
The largest private armoury in the Alps can be found at Chur Castle at Sluderno. From here, at daybreak you will find the best view of the Ortler. Whether it was this that inspired the famous chamois hunter Josef Pichler, known as "Pseyrer Josele", to be the first man to climb the 3,905 m high Ortler 200 years ago remains uncertain. Even though, the castle at Chur is very interesting and well worth a visit. This is where you will be able to read an account of the first ascent of the Ortler. Click here.

Lasa
Marble from Lasa
was the Habsburgs’ favourite stone, although it has also been widely used to produce a multitude of statues as far afield as New York, London, Berlin and Munich. Perhaps the most imposing example is the statue of Pallas Athena outside the parliament building in the Vienna Ringstrasse. "Carrara is rubbish, but Lasa is living" was the view of the Bavarian sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler. Up to a height of 2,500 m, the mountain range to the south of Lasa in the South Tyrol consists of millions of cubic metres of white marble. Lasa marble is one of the most weather-resistant stones in the world. The largest excavation gallery with a height of 2,228 metres is initially being worked using a cable car. The work is supervised by Georg Josef Lechner, the fourth of the legendary "Marble Lechners". More Information
